Greetings Everyone, For those who may not know me, my name is LaJoi Wiggins (or should I say Dr. Wiggins now ☺),  and I am one of the newest bloggers to the EDIC family. A quick background about me. I was born in Hawaii into a military family but claim Raleigh, North Carolina as my home as it has been for over 20 years. I have two amazing parents and I am the youngest of three. I am a recent 2017 graduate of East Carolina University School of Dental School and a current GPR Resident at Oklahoma University Medical Center. If you would have asked me even two years ago if I would be living in the Midwest, let alone Oklahoma City. I would have never believed you. I have always been an east coast type of girl and have lived within two hours of my family. However, when I learned about OU Medical Center’s GPR Program, and how wonderful it was, without hesitation. I applied and MATCHED.

Packing up the car to leave for Oklahoma City was one hardest and most uncomfortable thing that I had to do. It was about more than moving to a new city (growing up as a military brat, It became very routine for me to adjust to different environments and FAST), it was beginning a new chapter in my life and the closing of one. I was leaving behind my childhood, my family, and friends, my comfort zone. Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to become a doctor. However, now that I have accomplished that, I started having the uncomfortable feeling of “what’s next?”. Although, I was excited to begin my program. I was also a tad bit scared. Of the unknown.

As I pulled out of my driveway, my eyes became filled with tears. My tears represented happiness. fear. and uncertainty. As I wiped my eyes, I heard an inner voice in my head say “trust the process. ” I took a deep inhale, and that’s what I did. We embarked on the 18-hour ride and stopped at historical places in history along the way. My parents and I were determined to make this the best road trip ever. Once I arrived and got settled, I began to feel very vulnerable. In the midst of my vulnerability, I turned to God and asked: “What is it that you want me to do here.” Through prayer and wisdom from friends, I decided instead of focusing on what I was fearful of, to start focusing on what I could achieve. I immediately forgot about what I thought I was missing out from being so far from home and realize that I have a great opportunity before me. I decided to use this year to grow and focus on myself. Since that day, I saw a difference in my attitude and my outlook on things. I started making new goals, a new vision board, and even a list of 100 things to do while in Oklahoma. I started going to the gym five times a week, dedicating the necessary time and energy needed to improve both my physical and mental health. Ultimately, I decided to take full advantage of this season in my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I decided to share this with readers because there are going to be times in your life where you are going to be scared and even doubtful of some of the decisions you have made. Those feelings are perfectly normal and alright. But next time you feel that way, try focusing that energy on becoming a better you. Remember why you choose those decisions and keep pushing towards your goal despite how you feel at times. Remember it is all a part of the process and to embrace every season of your life. I am looking forward to sharing the lessons that I learn out while out here in Oklahoma as I begin my quest to become more independent and into a better version of myself. Onward and upward.
